5 Product Description Mistakes That Make Your Shopify Store Invisible to AI

We scanned dozens of Shopify stores for AI readiness. The average score was 34 out of 100. The number one reason? Product descriptions. Here are the five most common mistakes and how to fix each one.

We built SearchReady to measure how well Shopify stores are structured for AI shopping engines like ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. After scanning dozens of stores, one pattern became impossible to ignore: the average AI-Readiness Score was just 34 out of 100.

The single biggest factor dragging scores down? Product descriptions.

Description Quality accounts for 30 out of 100 points in our scoring rubric, making it the most heavily weighted category. And most stores are leaving the majority of those points on the table.

Here are the five most common description mistakes we see, why they make your store invisible to AI, and exactly how to fix each one.

Mistake 1: Descriptions that are too short

This is the most common problem by far. A huge percentage of the products we scan have descriptions under 50 words. Many have fewer than 20. Some have none at all.

When a shopper asks ChatGPT "what is a good moisturizer for dry skin in winter," the AI needs to find products that match that specific query. A description that says "Luxurious face cream. Your skin will thank you." contains zero information about skin type, season, ingredients, or use case. ChatGPT literally cannot recommend it because there is nothing to match against.

The fix: Aim for 100 words minimum per product. That is not a lot. It is roughly one short paragraph. But it is enough to include the key information AI engines need to match your product to relevant queries. Before:
Luxurious face cream. Your skin will thank you. Made with the finest ingredients.
After:
A rich daily moisturizer formulated for dry and sensitive skin, especially effective during cold winter months. Made with hyaluronic acid for deep hydration, shea butter for lasting moisture, and ceramides to strengthen the skin barrier. Absorbs quickly without a greasy feel. Fragrance-free and dermatologist-tested. Suitable for women and men. Apply morning and evening after cleansing for best results. 2 oz jar, approximately 60-day supply.

The second version gives AI shopping engines everything they need: skin type, season, ingredients, application method, audience, size, and supply duration. That single product can now match dozens of different shopping queries.

Mistake 2: Features without context

Some stores list specifications but never explain what they mean or who they are for. This is common with electronics, tools, and technical products.

A product listing that says "5000mAh battery, IP67 rating, Bluetooth 5.3" is technically detailed. But it tells AI nothing about the use case. Is this a speaker for the shower? A flashlight for camping? A fitness tracker for swimmers?

AI shopping engines do not just match specs to queries. They try to understand whether a product is a good fit for a specific person with a specific need. Without context, specs are just numbers.

The fix: For every specification, add a sentence about what it means for the user. Before:
5000mAh battery. IP67 waterproof. Bluetooth 5.3. 40mm drivers.
After:
Built-in 5000mAh battery delivers up to 24 hours of continuous playback, enough for a full day at the beach or a weekend camping trip. IP67 waterproof rating means it handles rain, splashes, and even a brief dunk in the pool. Bluetooth 5.3 provides stable, low-latency connection up to 50 feet from your phone. Custom 40mm drivers produce deep bass and clear mids, tuned specifically for outdoor listening.

Mistake 3: Marketing fluff with no substance

"You will love it!" "The best thing since sliced bread!" "A must-have for every home!"

These phrases feel like they are selling, but they tell AI shopping engines absolutely nothing. When ChatGPT is researching products, it is looking for factual information it can use to compare options and build a recommendation. Subjective claims without supporting detail get filtered out.

This does not mean your descriptions need to be dry or robotic. It means every sentence should contain at least one piece of concrete information.

The fix: Replace every vague claim with a specific fact. Before:
This amazing bag goes with everything! Perfect for any occasion. You won't believe the quality. A total game-changer!
After:
A versatile crossbody bag crafted from full-grain Italian leather with an adjustable strap that extends from 20 to 52 inches. Works for daily commuting, weekend outings, and evening events. Interior features two main compartments, a zippered pocket, and three card slots. Fits phones up to 6.7 inches. Available in black, cognac, and olive. Weighs just 14 oz.

Mistake 4: Missing materials and specifications

AI shopping engines use specific words to understand what your product is made of and how it performs. We maintain word lists of over 50 material terms (cotton, leather, titanium, ceramic, bamboo), 40+ specification terms (bluetooth, waterproof, mAh, lumens, megapixel), and dozens of other attribute categories.

When we scan a store and find that none of its products mention any materials or specifications, it is a strong signal that AI will struggle to recommend those products. If someone asks ChatGPT for "a cotton t-shirt for working out" and your shirt description never mentions cotton or any other fabric, your product will not appear.

The fix: Audit your top 10 products right now. For each one, check whether the description mentions:
  • Material: What is it made of? (cotton, polyester, stainless steel, walnut wood, silicone)
  • Key spec: What is the standout measurable attribute? (weight, capacity, battery life, dimensions)
  • Finish or texture: How does it look or feel? (matte, brushed, soft-touch, ribbed knit)
If any of these are missing, add them. This alone can move your AI-Readiness Score up by 10-15 points.

Mistake 5: No target audience or use case

This is the subtlest mistake and one of the most impactful. Most product descriptions never say who the product is for or when someone would use it.

AI shopping queries are almost always audience-specific or occasion-specific:

  • "Best gift for a 10-year-old who loves science"
  • "Comfortable work shoes for nurses"
  • "Lightweight jacket for spring hiking"
  • "Desk lamp for college dorm room"
If your product description never mentions an audience (kids, professionals, beginners, athletes) or an occasion (gift, outdoor, travel, everyday), it cannot match these queries. And these are exactly the kinds of queries people ask AI shopping assistants. The fix: Add one sentence that names your target audience and one sentence that names the top use case or occasion. Before:
High quality desk lamp with adjustable brightness. Modern design. USB charging port included.
After:
A compact LED desk lamp designed for students, remote workers, and anyone who needs focused task lighting in a small space. Three brightness levels and a flexible gooseneck let you adjust the light for reading, studying, or video calls. Built-in USB-A charging port keeps your phone powered without an extra adapter. Slim base fits comfortably on dorm desks, nightstands, and small home offices. Matte white finish, 15 inches tall, weighs 1.2 lbs.

Notice how the "after" version can now match queries like "desk lamp for college students," "lamp for video calls," "small desk lamp with USB charger," and "dorm room lighting." The "before" version matches almost none of those.

How these mistakes affect your score

SearchReady's AI-Readiness Score evaluates your products across five categories. Description quality is the most important, but these five mistakes affect multiple categories:

  • Description Quality (30 points): Short descriptions and fluff directly lower this score
  • Semantic Richness (15 points): Missing materials, audience, and use case signals drop this to zero
  • Title Clarity (15 points): Vague descriptions often come with vague titles
  • Attribute Completeness (25 points): Stores with thin descriptions tend to also have empty product types and missing tags
  • Structured Data Readiness (15 points): Incomplete descriptions mean less data for AI to parse
The stores that score 70+ almost always have descriptions over 100 words that include materials, specs, audience, and use cases. The stores that score under 30 almost always have short, vague descriptions with no concrete details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should my Shopify product descriptions be for AI?

Aim for at least 100 words per product. That is enough to include materials, specifications, use cases, target audience, and key differentiators. Products with descriptions under 50 words score significantly lower on AI readiness because there is not enough information for AI shopping engines to match them to relevant queries.

Which words should I include in my product descriptions for AI search?

Focus on concrete, factual terms: material names (cotton, leather, titanium), specifications (waterproof, bluetooth, 5000mAh), audience descriptors (women, kids, professional), and occasion words (gift, outdoor, wedding, everyday). These are the types of words AI shopping engines use to match products to specific shopper queries.

Can AI-generated descriptions help my AI-Readiness Score?

Yes. SearchReady generates AI-enhanced product descriptions as part of every scan. These descriptions are structured to include the materials, specs, audience, and use case information that AI shopping engines need. You can copy them directly into your Shopify admin as a starting point and customize from there.
